The Shard, at London Bridge is currently the tallest building in western Europe. With 11,000 glass panels to its exterior, the building stands at almost 310 metres with 95 floors that provide a hotel, luxury residential accommodation and modern office space.

Severfield, one of Fabsec’s shareholders, was responsible for the connection design and fabrication of 12,700 tonnes of structural steelwork. Of this, 7,500 tonnes are coated with fire protection paint and 6,000 tonnes are Fabsec plated beams with bespoke service openings ensuring maximum flexibility for service penetrations.

Severfield’s experienced construction team erected the steelwork on site, with a number of trial erections taking place off site, such as the spire, to ensure smooth installation once on site The company also supplied and fixed the metal decking, edge protection and stairs throughout.
