The force behind FABSEC

FABSEC and FIREBEAM® cellular beams are typically used in floor spans of 8-24 metres and roof spans of up to 60 metres, they require fewer columns, which affords greater design flexibility and architectural freedom.

Our cellular beams are fabricated out of plate which has been analysed and designed within the FBEAM software and procured from one of our licensed fabricators, Cellbeam Ltd and Severfield Plc. The FIREBEAM® uses innovative coating technologies from Sherwin Williams UK Coatings Ltd.

This gives both the specifying engineer and the client the confidence that the beam is designed and produced in accordance with industry leading standards.

Our Shareholders

Severfield plc is the UK’s market-leader in structural steelwork, with a long and successful history of delivering iconic projects across a diverse range of sectors.  Severfield is the largest structural steel company in the UK, it is one of the biggest in Europe, operating across four sites, and also has successful operations in India.

The company is unified in its proven strengths of:

  • Unrivalled capacity
  • Performance
  • High quality products
  • Engineering excellence
  • Customer service

Following the joint venture establishment of Fabsec Ltd in 2001, a plated section processing line was added at Severfield’s Dalton site in North Yorkshire.  Since then, this facility has offered beams with bespoke web openings that are designed for structural and mechanical efficiency, with added value of a pleasing architectural appearance.

Production Lines 7 and 8 followed at the Dalton site in 2001 and 2003 respectively, to provide custom-built facilities for the environmentally controlled application of intumescent fire protection paint.

Severfield is signed up to the Business Ambition for 1.5 C, led by the UN Global Compact and is committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Demonstrating our decarbonisation agenda means working towards our net zero targets for Scope 1 & 2 by 2040, and Scope 3 by 2050. We are also a member and signatory of SteelZero, which sets a target for procuring 100% net zero steel by 2050.

Furthermore, we continue to be accredited with the Gold Membership Standard of the Steel Construction Sustainability Charter, as well as being accredited with BES 6001, with a rating of ’Very good’. We also have the ISO 14001 accreditation, and have been Carbon Neutral since 2021.

Ranked No.1 coatings company in the World, Sherwin-Williams manufactures and supplies high-performance protective coatings to a vast number of industries.  Whether providing passive fire protection from the world-class FIRETEX® range, or high-performance anti-corrosive coating solutions. Sherwin-Williams is committed to developing and delivering innovative protective and marine coatings, unparalleled service and expert specification support to its customers.

Cellular Beams
Cellular beams are increasingly being specified because of their reduced weight, ease of service integration and pleasing aesthetic appearance, with this in mind Sherwin-Williams has developed a range of thin film intumescent coating solutions designed to be used on cellular beams, which can provide fire protection for up to 2 hours.  In consultation with FABSEC® (The UK’s leading supplier of long span plated cellular beams), we can also offer fully fire engineered plate girder beams with any opening configuration including rectangular openings.

Fabsec Firebeams are coated with FIRETEX® FX6002 which is a quick drying passive fire protection (PFP) material that has replaced traditional solvent based materials and gives massive reductions in VOC emissions – something that is particularly important as these products are typically applied as relatively thick films compared to ‘normal’ paints such as decorative or corrosion protection systems.  It can be handled in as little as one hour, while providing a highly durable and aesthetically pleasing finish, and also provides substantial savings in production times and site repairs and offers longer durability.  This all goes a long way to reducing the cradle to grave environmental footprint of the PFP system and is just one example of our relentless focus on improving sustainability.

The William Hare Group is a world-leading steel work contractor, providing value-engineered steel solutions to some of the world’s most innovative and sustainable construction projects. William Hare was formally incorporated in 1945 and is now the leading independent steel fabrication company in the UK with an annual turnover in excess of £170 million. We continue to build on this foundation by working in both emerging and well-established sectors, all over the world.

William Hare entered into the FABSEC® joint venture in 2003 and uses the FABSEC Software to facilitate efficient, lean designs in both the ambient and fire conditions.  With 5 key fabrication facilities in the UK, Cellbeam is our licenced FABSEC® production facility, based in Wetherby Yorkshire, with a capacity in excess of 20,000T PA. Our UK facilities are supplemented by Cellbeam in the Middle East to expand the production of FABSEC® Cellular Beams to ensure the ever-increasing global demand is met.

We are committed to achieving the best possible environmental performance throughout our activities and those of our supply chain. Our approach to achieving this started back in 2010 when we began measuring, managing and reducing our carbon footprint through the Achilles Carbon Reduce Programme.  This culture led to us being the first UK Steelwork Contractor to become Carbon Zero certified in 2021 and we continue, through industry engagement, on our pathway to NetZero by 2050.

William Hare continues to engage in key sustainable initiatives such as:

  • SteelZero Membership
  •  UKGBC Gold Leaf Members
