Steel & Sustainability

Sustainability is at the core of Fabsec’s approach. Using the advanced FBEAM® design software, engineers can optimise steel beam solutions with precision, delivering structures that are efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective. Steel itself is a 100% recyclable material that can be reused indefinitely without any loss of strength or performance. Its high strength-to-weight ratio allows for resource-efficient structures, reducing embodied carbon across the building’s lifecycle.

Long-span steel solutions designed in FBEAM® create open, column-free spaces that are adaptable to future changes in building use, enhancing the long-term value of a project. The software also provides whole-life embodied carbon calculations at an individual element level, enabling design teams to make informed decisions and meet sustainability targets with confidence.

In construction, long-span steel beams offer speed, predictability, and quality. Off-site manufactured and fire-protected FABSEC® cellular beams minimise site work, ensuring safer, faster, and more consistent results while reducing weather-related risks and costly delays. This streamlined approach not only supports sustainable practices but also ensures lasting performance and flexibility in the finished structure.

FBEAM can design composite and non-composite plain and cellular beams, both normal and fire engineered.

About Our Shareholders

Our shareholders are committed to minimising their impact on the natural environment and local communities, as well as maintaining sustainable practices in all their disciplines.

Significant progress has already been made in areas such as carbon management, transport policy and strategy, renewable energy and the responsible sourcing of materials.

Severfield is a certified carbon-neutral business, with Net Zero targets independently verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company is audited annually against the Achilles Carbon Reduce Standard and has earned multiple external accreditations and awards. These demonstrate Severfield’s continued commitment to reducing emissions and driving sustainability across the construction industry. Discover more here.

As shareholders in Fabsec, William Hare are advocates lean design initiatives that enable dual decarbonisation strategies championed by SteelZero, key areas that the FBeam software can help facilitate.

William Hare is committed to the verification of their Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions through Toitū carbon reduction certification standard, formerly known as CEMARS (Carbon Emissions Management and Reduction Scheme) and forms an important part of their Net Zero targets that have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).  Delivering continued carbon reductions over a 15-year period has seen William Hare awarded Platinum reducer status by Achilles.  Read More

Sherwin Williams sustainability performance results provide an in-depth look at the results of their sustainability efforts. These results are presented following the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) format and include data on corporate governance, environmental management, environmental goals and performance, product stewardship, community and social involvement, labour practices and worker health and safety.
